Vol. 64 No. 01 (2014)

The manuscript in Volume 64, Issue 1 (2014) of the Journal of Southern Agricultural Education Research (JSAER) examines a foundational element of teacher preparation — the student teaching relationship — through the lens of leadership theory.

Teacher Preparation and the Student Teaching Experience

  • Cooperating Teacher Leadership Style and Student Teacher Satisfaction: A quantitative descriptive-correlational study of 19 student teachers and 29 cooperating teachers at Texas Tech University applies Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Model to examine the relationship between cooperating teachers' preferred leadership style and student teachers' satisfaction, finding that the majority of cooperating teachers preferred the supporting style and that a moderate positive correlation existed between the supporting style and student teacher satisfaction across measures of acceptance, counseling, friendship, and overall perceived satisfaction, while the coaching style showed negative moderate correlations with those same measures, recommending that cooperating teachers be trained to assess student teacher development levels and adapt their leadership style accordingly throughout the semester.
